due to insufficient funding:

The National Weather Service relies on real-time data from many of these threatened gages to develop flood forecasts that save lives and prevent millions of dollars in flood damages.  Please join us in educating decision makers about the value of real-time stream and river gage data.  The Spring 2009 NYSFSMA News includes an article about the programs through which the US Geological Survey gages are funded.  Our November 2008 letter to congress stressed the need for reliable gage funding.  Additional multi-agency letters are available from the Interstate Council on Water Policy.
